Step 1
Look at 3 images from 2 major Surrealist artists. Please note that Google images does not discriminate between master artists and fan art. You need to. To reliably find the real master artist work, please use websites that end in .edu or major art galleries like the National Gallery of Canada, MOMA, the Louvre, Musee D'Orsay, the Tate, or the Art Institute of Chicago. Record the title, artist, and date in your sketchbook of all works studied. Write a two sentence reflection of the artists you researched. Please discuss in the reflection how the work is Surrealist (ie. what is the subject matter and why is it Surrrealist) as well as the artist's use of the principles and elements of design. Step 2 Gather 5-8 photographs magazine cut outs or drawings, as well as at least one teacher-given image. In the spirit of the Surrealists, assemble these works in a non sequitur manner on an 8x10" paper. Please consider, however, compositional elements like emphasis, movement, balance, and pattern. Images must, as a total, occupy two-thirds of the collage. Step 3 Before you glue all the pieces securely to the paper, dialogue with me. Please be prepared to verbally explain the required compositional elements in your collage. Once you have completed the collage and explained your composition, and have shown me your technical studies as well as your research, you will be given a 16x20" canvas. Step 4 Draw a cross hair grid on the 8x10" paper as well as the 16x20" canvas (you must have completed the studies, research, and collage to receive this canvas). Step 5 Carefully record the shapes from your collage to the canvas. Step 6 An underpainting is strongly recommended. There are quite a variety of techniques and purposes for an underpainting. I suggest you use the linked underpainting technique. This will allow you to map out your shapes, provide a color to allow the picture to breath, and to unite shapes. Step 7 Using color mixing and technical skills developed in the studies, complete the painting. Stay as true as possible to original collage in your final painting. |
